Matson Music Box -

Well...maybe it’s only the requisite moniker for a thirty-year vision and twenty year project, conceived simply to release a single album, but in many ways, it can be seen as a model ... a blueprint even ... for how highly skilled, seasoned musicians can come together via technology, and create an exceptional musical work ... without ever meeting.

From another angle, it's a confederation of talented should-have-been’s ... and hopefull, yet-to-be’s ... saying "listen!" to the music world. "There's something different here ... something new, yet classic ... something with substance and quality and melody and power ... and you really need to hear it."

Stylistically, MMB is reminiscent of 70s & 80s flavored, prog-rock. But while influenced by groups such as Pink Floyd, Yes, Deep Purple, Kansas, and ELP, MMB music is undeniably unique featuring bold chord progressions lying beneath instrumentation that ranges from artfully tasteful to technically brilliant ... all while putting intricate melodies and vocal harmonies front and center.

Call it what you will, but this stuff is really different than the current fare ... while retaining rock and roll at its core, and delivering just enough pop flavor to appeal to a wide audience. Everything is consummately musical, exceptionally melodic, and will grab hold of a spot in your head and not let go.

So now, we try to make something happen ... daunting in today's world of countless songs coming from every direction, hundreds of music sources, diminishing CD sales, and a general climate of disposable music. But that's where this “Perfect World” album and MMB can stand apart.

For you ... the listener ... the fan ... the curious ... we hope you'll choose to experience our work as it was intended ... as an ALBUM and not just a collection of songs thrown together to fill up a plastic disc. Put your headphones on, turn out the lights, lay in the floor, close your eyes, and listen to it like music was meant to be listened to, not only with your ears, but with your whole being.

3/3/10 - Perfect World - International Sales

One of the most intersting things that has happened as Perfect World has been released is to see the number of sales/downloads that are coming in from outside the US. We've shipped CDs to Japan, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Australia, just to name a few. In addition, web site statistics are showing a lot of international hits. The beauty of this digital age is that it's as easy to download across the ocean as it is down the block!

2/27/10 - Matson Music Works Studio Expansion

The Matson Music Works Studio, recording home of MMB, has been expanded is now open for commercial services. We've got a large keyboard area and separate isolation areas from drums, vocals, and guitars. The control room has added a new 32x8 analog board and additional pre-amps and other outboard gear. the DAW has been updated to the latest greatest software, and we're able to handle a BUNCH of tracks and processing. 12/18/09 - Perfect World Released!

After nearly 30 years in concept, over twenty years in development, and 3 1/2 years in recording and production, we are extremely pleased to finally announce the release of the Matson Music Box's debut CD album, "Perfect World."

Perfect World is a "story in song", a concept album, meant to be listened to as an album. And while the story is a common and simple one on the surface, the message underneath goes much deeper.The music is influenced by the progressive rock of the 70s and 80s, but it's an all new digital production, professionally mastered, and features strong hooks and melodies that will stick in your head. The songs range from catchy and cool, to reflective and contemplative, but are all highly musical.
